PhD in Medicine

Serious medical research begins with a good question and a mentor who knows how to listen to it. At UVVG, a PhD in Medicine means individual supervision, direct access to research infrastructure, and an academic community where your work matters—from the first report to the public defense.

PhD Supervisors

The field of Medicine is supported by a team of accredited professors, active in clinical and biomedical research, with internationally indexed publications and collaborations with prestigious European universities.

Programme delivery

The PhD programme in Medicine lasts 4 years (8 semesters) and includes two mandatory components: the Advanced University Training Programme and the Scientific Research Programme.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The advanced training programme is delivered based on a curriculum endorsed by CSUD and approved by the Senate. The mandatory courses ensure a unified approach to scientific research and competencies in project management, valorisation of results, research ethics, and biostatistics.

Mandatory courses:

Scientific research methodology

Scientific research ethics

Designing and writing a scientific paper

Statistical processing of experimental data (I and II)

Research project management

Fundamental principles in the use of information technology for research

Communication

Semester 2 concludes with the development of the Scientific Research Programme Project—a document that defines the doctoral topic, objectives, methodology, and the schedule of planned activities.

Graduates of research Master’s programmes hosted by the Doctoral Schools may have the mandatory courses recognised as equivalent, upon request submitted to the Doctoral School Council.

The research programme is organised individually for each doctoral student by the PhD supervisor. Research activity is assessed through four reports presented before the guidance committee:

Report 1 (sem. 3): Bibliographic report — current state of knowledge in the field

Report 2 (sem. 4): Bibliographic report — in-depth study of the doctoral topic

Report 3 (sem. 5): Interim research results

Report 4 (sem. 6): Interim research results

Assessment is based on the following grades: very good · good · satisfactory · unsatisfactory. The interval between two consecutive presentations may not exceed 12 months. The research programme concludes with the drafting and public defense of the doctoral thesis (semester 7/8). SDM periodically organises specialist conferences with international collaborators, to which all doctoral students are invited, regardless of the stage of their programme.

The public defenses of doctoral theses and habilitation works are open to the academic community and are announced on the university website at least 15 days in advance.

UVVG PhD students have access to their own research infrastructure and international databases through the university’s institutional subscriptions.
